Good to know: Coating rollers in modern production
Why is the surface geometry of the roller so crucial?
In coating technology, the microstructure of the roller surface determines the success of the end product. Whether applying ultra-thin functional coatings in the electronics industry or applying adhesive over a large area, only a precisely calculated cup volume and precise engraving ensure that the material is transferred in the desired quantity and with the required uniformity.
How is the optimum engraving determined for different viscosities?
The choice of engraving geometry – for example, hashure, pyramid or cup engraving – depends directly on the flow properties of your medium. Whilst low-viscosity coatings require fine structures to ensure a smooth finish, high-viscosity pastes or adhesives require a larger scoop volume.
We use computer-aided simulations and our many years of experience to precisely tailor the ideal cell volume to your process parameters. This guarantees a streak-free application and minimises material wastage.
What role does surface hardness play in the service life of the rollers?
Coating rollers are often exposed to chemically aggressive media or mechanical abrasion caused by doctor blade systems. Through specialised surface treatments, such as industrial hard chrome plating or ceramic coatings, we maximise wear resistance at the micrometre level. For you, this means: consistent transfer rates over millions of running metres, less frequent roller changes and, consequently, a significantly higher Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
Can existing roller cores be reconditioned?
Yes, sustainability and cost-effectiveness go hand in hand at SAUERESSIG. As part of our refurbishment service, we check your used roller cores for dimensional accuracy and concentricity. After the coating has been removed, they are electroplated, engraved and finished. This cycle conserves valuable resources, reduces your carbon footprint and offers you the precision you’ve come to expect from a new roller, at optimised terms.
