SAUERESSIG Surfaces: Technology leader and trendsetter in surface design

Press | 6 April 2023

As one of only a very few providers worldwide, SAUERESSIG Surfaces serves the complex surfaces market with turnkey solutions in the field of surface design and finishing. Here, we present the full scope of its services and the possibilities offered by this global player in surface technology throughout the entire process – from design and product development, cylinder manufacturing and electroplating processes to engraving and quality management.

There is a good reason why design diversity and expertise are a top priority at SAUERESSIG Surfaces. Its Mönchengladbach site is home to the industry’s largest artwork and design studio, where more than 30 employees support projects from the initial creative development stage through to visualisation. The market-focused and creative team ensures that several hundred innovative designs are developed and offered every year. With its ambition not merely to follow trends but to set them, together with its extensive preliminary development work, SAUERESSIG is often the first point of contact in the industry.

“We aim to be the technology leader and trendsetter in surface design. In terms of both our lead times and quality, we do not merely want to meet market requirements, but to exceed them,” summarises Steffen Völker, Managing Director Surfaces at the SAUERESSIG Group.

The technical properties of the products are just as much a priority as their visual and tactile impact. As a fully integrated roller manufacturer and engraver with its own engineering and roller production facilities, as well as all associated peripheral processes such as copper plating and chrome plating, SAUERESSIG has been producing printing and embossing rollers for a wide range of applications for decades, along with steel cores and sleeves developed specifically for gravure printing. From its Mönchengladbach site, the company provides all established engraving processes to customers worldwide.

Thanks to its gravure printing centre, where every stage – from reproduction to the optimal implementation of the engraving – is equipped for the future, the company is a leader in decorative engraving for gravure cylinders and embossing rollers. Continuous investment in state-of-the-art engraving and laser technologies, as well as the latest scanning and printing technologies for both 2D and 3D prototyping, provides a strong technological foundation. But that is not all: Europe’s most advanced electronic engraving centre is operated by a young and dedicated team, and the company places great importance on comprehensive training opportunities, ensuring that essential expertise in artwork and engraving techniques is passed on to the next generation.

In addition to the wide variety of processes available, customer requirements for end products are becoming increasingly diverse, notes Robert Djapjas, Director Design at SAUERESSIG Surfaces. These requirements relate not only to an exceptional appearance, but also to functional surfaces with additional technical properties, such as easy-to-clean characteristics, soft-touch effects, fingerprint resistance or hydrophobic properties.

“To create an authentic, tactile surface that the customer can also manufacture under realistic production conditions, we develop multi-layer structures consisting, for example, of a main structure and a microstructure, which may also feature different levels of gloss,” he explains, describing the underlying process.

Design expertise, technical know-how, customised consulting, continuous innovation and the latest technologies – at SAUERESSIG Surfaces, these elements go hand in hand to meet complex market requirements with targeted, professional solutions, from the initial idea through to the finished printing and embossing tool.
