CELENIUM® Sleeves – Expanded Testing Capabilities for Nonwovens. 3 Questions for Rüdiger Meyer.

3 Questions for Rüdiger Meyer, Head of Sales Nickel Screens and Drums Hygiene Industry at SAUERESSIG Surfaces, on the topic of “Expanded Testing Capabilities for Nonwovens – Sleeves Made of CELENIUM®”

What are the advantages of CELENIUM® compared with conventional surfaces such as aluminium or steel?

Nickel sleeves are typically used for hydroentanglement. The process uses a wide bath of up to 6,000 mm, which is ideally suited to production sleeves. For test runs, however, a large proportion of this capacity is wasted.

In addition, multiple patterns on a nickel sleeve influence one another during the manufacturing process, meaning that one pattern is prioritised in terms of its parameters while the others are produced with less precision. CELENIUM® is manufactured in shorter widths, and multiple patterns can be structured independently of one another using different techniques. It therefore turns the disadvantages of nickel production into advantages for test series.

Do CELENIUM® plates offer any advantages over the innovative sleeve in specific applications? When should sleeves be used?

CELENIUM® plates can be used for flatbed testing. They are also suitable for systems with diameters outside the industry standard of 515 mm. As they are extremely flexible, they can be used with diameters ranging, for example, from 389 mm to 909 mm. This ensures that testing can be carried out on virtually any existing system worldwide.

The sleeves are designed for the standard diameter of 515 mm, where they enable continuous, seamless test runs.

Is the process more energy-efficient and resource-efficient?

Compared with nickel sleeve production, the CELENIUM® sleeve is significantly more energy-efficient to manufacture. Production is considerably faster and therefore conserves resources. However, a sufficient number of long-term tests have not yet been carried out with CELENIUM® sleeves to make a reliable assessment. These tests are scheduled to take place over the course of the year.
